What to Expect in United Arab Emirates

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a federation made up of 7 emirates (states) located on the eastern shore of the Arabian Peninsula in southeast Asia.  The economy is fueled mostly by its production of gas and oil and has a growing tourism industry; oil exportation began as early as 1962.  The largest city in the UAE is Dubai, which is one big melting pot of cultures and religions.  The majority consists of Muslims, but there are a multitude of different people from different backgrounds. The primary language is Arabic, though English is widely spoken, especially in business.  To be honest, Arabic, is actually quite a difficult language to learn for English speakers, but knowing at least some conversational Arabic would be useful for your assimilation.

Most of the UAE is desert, with plains, dunes, and mountains scattered throughout.  Oases are basically the only places with substantial life.  The desert sands are known to kick up violent dust storms that can cover the entire landscape in a haze.  Average annual rainfall is less than 5 inches, with up to 14 inches accumulating in the mountains.

You will need a visa in order to live and work in Dubai.  Prior to international moving to Dubai you will need to contact your local UAE Consulate to find out what type of visa you will need and how to apply for it.  Make sure to give yourself plenty of time prior to moving to Dubai as the visa application process can take quite a bit of time.

Visiting or moving to the UAE you will find rather strict Islamic law, though comparatively not as bad as some other Islamic nations.  It is advisable to not publicly criticize Islam or distribute material against it.  Eating in public during Ramadan is prohibited from sunrise to sunset.  Unfortunately, homosexuality is illegal, and public displays of affection of any kind are frowned upon.  That being said, the UAE is great place to work and live, as the standard of living is high, and the cost of living reflects that.
